Replacing my Tuono
|
I have a 2004 Aprilia Tuono that I am planning to sell. As I am saving
to travel but still want to ride I plan on replacing it with a smaller
second hand bike that I own outright (I am still paying off the
Tuono). I have started creating a shortlist of bikes and want some
opinions on my choices.
Firstly, my priorities are as follows:
- Generally low cost to buy. I am looking to try and keep it under
$6000 Australian. For those not in Australia, by comparison, a brand
new CBR600RR or YZF-R6 cost about $15000 + on road costs. For $6000
one could potentially get a 97-99 CBR600R in a private sale.
- Low running costs, both in terms of fuel consumption and servicing
- Generally fun to ride though it may be difficult to compete with the
Tuono
- Highly reliable as it will be my primary form of transport and I
don't want to have to spend alot on it.
- The ability to take a rack with gearsack on the back.
The bikes which I have narrowed down and some preliminary thoughts on
each are:
- Yamaha TRX 850 (good as I like twins but maybe these getting a
little old now and size may drink a bit of fuel)
- Suzuki SV650 First Gen Model (lower fuel consumption, a little
boring but believe they are quite reliable)
- Honda CB600 Hornet 98-00 Model
Can anyone give any thoughts on this list or suggest any other bikes
that I should consider?

My vote would be on the SV650. Having been happy with the Tuono, I
think you'd be less pleased with the power delivery of the 4-cylinder
Hornet, and the SV650 is perhaps the closest you can find to a 3/4-
scale Tuono. The TRX850 was a cool bike (wish they had sent 'em to
the U.S.!) but as you point out, getting a little old now, plus
aftermarket support for it is bound to be less robust than that for
the SV.
Good luck in your decision!

He could get a older Ducati, numerous models to choose from and still
have a bit of the exotic factor going. Light, low end grunt and OK, maybe
not quite a reliable but not bad either. Great gas mileage too.

You obviously missed that part Mr Fletis.
Great gas mileage too.
Indeed, especially when they're sitting at the side of the road going
nowhere.
