They were realistic opportunities to show his mettle, which would have
lead to the big rides. It's no accident that the 'unlucky' riders
always get to ride for the 'unlucky' teams.
Well he did get poles on both the Aprilia & the Proton, but nobody
would ever have won a race on either of them no matter how good they
were.

Aprilia though.
He's knocking on a bit now, for that level of racing.
